Fifteen Essential Oils That Have Disinfecting Properties Plus DIY Cleansers

In Cooking & Crafting, Motherhood, Parenting by Jen

Right now, we all know that you are hard pressed to find a can of Lysol or a package of sanitizing and cleaning wipes just about anywhere. The good news is though, that even if you can’t find those items, you can still find some great essential oils that have antimicrobial properties and can help to boost the effectiveness of cleaners and disinfectants. Today I am sharing with you fifteen of my favorite disinfecting essential oils.

Keep in mind that the CDC is recommending social distancing and washing your hands as the main ways to help not spread COVID 19, but more and more research is being done about essential oils in general and the results are very encouraging. I prefer and use Young Living Essential Oils.  Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

Below are some of the essential oils that have been shown to have anti-bacterial qualities:

    1. Tea tree
    2. Lavender
    3. Geranium
    4. Lemon
    5. Orange
    6. Eucalyptus
    7. Rosemary
    8. Cinnamon
    9. Grapefruit
    10. Clove
    11. Thyme
    12. Peppermint
    13. Thieves
    14. Purification
    15. Oregano

As an added bonus, here are some easy to make DIY household cleanser recipes with essential oils.

DIY HOUSEHOLD CLEANSERS WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

Household Cleanser:

In a 16 oz. glass spray bottle combine 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 3/4 cups water, 30 drops essential oil (combos could be 15 drops each, lavender and lemon; 10 drops each, eucalyptus, peppermint and orange; 15 drops grapefruit and 15 drops lavender; or 30 drops thieves.) Be sure to add oils first and then the liquids to keep the bottle from overflowing.

DIY Soft Scrub:

For cleaning sinks and tubs, mix 5 drops lemon, peppermint, or orange essential oils or thieves with baking soda and enough water to make a paste. You are going to want to store this in a covered glass jar since essential oils have a tendency to break down plastics.

Hand Sanitizer:

In a 4 oz glass spray bottle, combine 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel, 20 drops thieves, fill the rest with water, and shake well before use. You can use a combo of the other oils, although steer clear of putting straight oregano in there. That oil tends to be fairly strong.

Disinfecting Spray:

In an 8 oz spray bottle of distilled water, add 3/4 cup distilled water, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 30 drops of one of the above essential oils.

Note: If you opt-out on using vinegar, you can substitute it with rubbing alcohol or vodka. If you decide to swap out the vinegar, be sure to test a small area on your surfaces. The alcohol or vodka may not be suitable for all surfaces. Keep in mind, the vinegar really won’t be noticeable with the essential oils and the smell dissipates quickly. Either way, vinegar and alcohol are also germ killers and will help the surface dry quickly with no streaks.
