Recently one beautiful and sunny Saturday afternoon as I busily delivered children to and from their various activities, my husband very sweetly and intuitively knowing that I was worn out told me to take a break. Informing me that he would happily take over all of the duties the rest of the day entailed.
I remember looking at him almost thunderstruck for a moment, not knowing what I would actually do with time spent alone! And I remember as I stood there thinking how did I get to that point?
I am not sure when or exactly how it happened, but somewhere in the past 14 years while in the throes of motherhood it seems to have become harder and harder to make time for me. It’s not that I don’t have a wonderful family who would begrudge my taking “me” time, it just seems harder than ever to plan those moments.
Or maybe it is just hard for me, but I don’t think I am the only woman who struggles with this.
As women and mothers it seems so easy for us to freely give of ourselves to others, and we do it consistently and effortlessly without even a second thought. Yet I know from experience it really is important that we also make sure to take time to help replenish ourselves so that we can continue to keep giving to those we love and hold dear.
Because doing even just a little good for ourselves can go a long way.
That sunny Saturday was my wake-up call and on that day I realized I needed to add a little more goodness, specifically for myself so that I could be great in the other areas of my life. And also so that I could be a good example to my children of living a healthy and balanced life.
Now I don’t want you to get nervous about taking time for yourself, because even the little things help to re-fill our buckets.
Something little that I like to do is to leave positive messages taped to highly visible places in my house. It might sound corny, but my little “love notes” give a hug of encouragement to me AND they also help to encourage the members of my family!
Here are some other ideas for little things you can do every day to give yourself a break and help you to further enjoy the little things in life:
- Buy your favorite magazine and take a few minutes by yourself to read it.
- Keep your digital reader stocked so that you always have a good book on the ready!
- Take a bubble bath every once in a while instead of a hurried shower.
- Go on a nature walk alone or make time for you to exercise.
- Sign up for a class in something that interests you.
- Enlist help- Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family members for help when you feel you could use a little time alone.
- It’s also a great idea to treat yourself by picking up your favorite snack. Doing so gives you a chance to take a moment and enjoy the goodness of life!
Recently I discovered the goodnessknows® Snack Squares and I have to say this has become one of my most favorite additions to help me fully enjoy those little “me” time moments. Because within our busy lives it’s important to take the time and enjoy the good things, even if just a little.
