Mommy Reality: My NEW Best Friend

In Mommy Reality by Jen32 Comments

Two weeks ago I had just stepped into the shower to enjoy a few minutes of me time when one of my children ran into the bathroom screaming that there was a fire in the kitchen!

With shampoo still streaming from my hair I quickly grabbed my towel and ran down the stairs. I am sure that battling a kitchen fire in such attire was just one example of one of my “best”  ideas…..

As I ran I could smell that there was indeed a definite smokey air to the house. Upon reaching the kitchen I was greeted by my husband who said that the dishwasher had indeed caught fire somehow. I asked if something had melted inside on the heating/drying element and he said that no the machine had actually just started smoking and spewing during the dry cycle.

Nice. Has this ever happened to anyone else or am I just that lucky?

Anyway, one Black Friday purchase later and I am the (almost) proud new owner of a dishwasher!! Hopefully the dishwasher should be delivered this week. Two plus weeks of washing and drying the dishes for a family of 6 has made me realize that I would have made a terrible homemaker in the pre-appliance era.

I can assure you I did not look this put together or happy as I washed my sink(s) full of dishes!

In other Mommy related news that just can’t be made up……

Last night my little Rebekah wanted to help me cut some oranges off of our citrus tree. All was going well until I asked her where my trimmers were.  As I cut she had been happily sweeping up a pile of leaves and putting them in the trash. Upon hearing my question she looked up at at me in shock and said, “Mommy I think I just threw them away!”

We both tentatively leaned over the lid of the garbage can and looked down into it’s smelly wasteland wondering if it would be worth it to venture in to try and recover them.

The answer was a certifiable NO and so it looks like I will also be needing a new pair of clippers for Christmas!

  1. I have no link, I’m such a failure at this Mommy Reality thing. I however, do have a dishwasher and thank my lucky stars that I only wash the plastic stuff by hand. Donna Reed, I am Not.

I seriously love these reality challenges, I just am too disorganized to participate.

    1. Glad I’m not alone!

I know that doing the dishes hasn’t killed me, but we have been like the abomination of desolation here in our family with so many illnesses this last month that I really missed the sanitizing option of the dishwasher!

    1. We had a dishwasher when I was a kid, but my Dad didn’t use it. He would have one of us kids help him wash and dry. Funny, how that chore was something I looked forward to because we would get to spend alone time together. I have tried to do that with my children this last few weeks, but I don’t think the result has been quite the same as my memories….

  2. AHHH Our dishwasher did the same exact thing! I just got my new one a week ago and literally it was the best day of my life.

  3. Sometimes it’s just not worth it to go digging in the garbage! I get you.
I didn’t ask for anything practical this year.. because cameras and lenses and shoes, oh my..but I would love a new garbage can. Ours is terrible.

  4. Ha! I love this! I’ve never heard of this happening to a dishwasher, but the great thing is that it turned into a brand new one so yay! I can’t even imagine how tough it would have been to wash so many dishes though. I definitely got to see how spoiled we really were before we moved into our place and had to do the same. I also don’t have a family of 6 though so I see what you mean!

  5. I am so happy you were able to get a new dishwasher Jen! I cannot stand to do the dishes by hand…ughhhhh! I think I’d rather clean both toilets than stand there washing dishes…I’m being serious. Hahaha As part of Brooklynn and Kelsey’s chores they are required to do the dishes on a daily basis take turns washing/loading the dishwasher and putting everything away. As my sister was told not that long ago by her brother-in-law, “You need to learn to utilize your FREE child labor.” LOL

I have a Mommy Reality update as well. After publishing my post about desperately needing a new clothes dryer after ours “mysteriously” just stopped drying the clothes, my good friend and neighbor called me to offer their old dryer as she just had a new washer and dryer set delivered. It was a Christmas miracle I’m telling you.

    Wishing you an AWESOME day.

That is fabulous! I am so happy to hear you are getting a new to you one. My washing machine and dryer are my other best friends. I would be lost without them! A few years ago ours broke down and it was about a week without it before the repairman could get here. That was a very long week at the laundromat!

  6. Hi Jen, after reading these comments I’m starting to feel a tad left out (being the only one without a dishwasher!). I would love one, but we just don’t have the room, we all muck in with the dishes so it could be worse.

Congratulations on your Black Friday buy and as you are washing and drying your last sink load of dishes by hand, spare a thought for us poor hand washers!

Don’t you just love children and their slapdash ways?

    1. I think you have dishwashers at least the kind I have been employing the last several weeks…. my kids! They make wonderful dishwashers plus their hands are much more youthful looking than ours and don’t get destroyed by all of the sudsy water like ours do:)
